Fire kills 13 after birthday cake falls to floor in French bar

A fire swept through a bar in the northern French city of Rouen overnight, killing 13 people and injuring six, after a birthday cake with candles and sparklers fell to the floor and set the carpet ablaze, police said.

The fire broke out in the basement of the popular Cuba Libre bar and quickly engulfed the room where some 20 people were celebrating, filling it with thick black smoke and poisonous fumes, a Rouen police officer told Reuters.

"A large number of those who died were killed by the fire, others were overcome by the toxic fumes," the officer said.

Just looked at the picture at the link. Apparently, when a birthday cake falls to the floor and starts fire, the windows of the building where the fire occurs get blown out.

It is probably because of being a quaint little French bistro where the structure is the same as it was 100 years ago, no updates in infrastructure or appropriate fire control apparatus because it ‘wouldn’t look French’. The place was probably a tinderbox.

When I attended college (mid 70’s) some of the classrooms had carpets in them. After Christmas break they had taken them out. Seems the carpets were made of a highly toxic and flammable material.
