In my 70s I’ve been receiving SS retirement benefits for years. I have an old TracFone that stays in my vehicle for emergencies only. I normally use my land-line. I can’t say I remember ever doing anything over the internet with the SSA. When I applied for retirement benefits, I went to a local Federal bldg. My benefits are direct deposited every month and any notice of change to my benefits or Medicare premium and my SSA 1099 are mailed to me.
How will this effect me if at all?

70% of American adults over age 65 DO NOT have a smartphone.

You don't need a smart phone to get texts. Even my old flip phone with just a number pad was technically able to send and receive texts. It was just too unpleasant to actually try use that feature. And my slider phone actually makes texting more pleasant than it is on a smart phone.

In principle, you don't need online access and you are presumably unaffected. However:

  1. Even if one doesn't need online access to one's account or if one is not getting benefits yet, it is advised that people create an account, anyway—before an identity thief creates an account for you.

  2. I am not yet getting benefits; but I log on to my account occasionally just to verify that there is no unexpected income (e.g., from some illegal alien borrowing my social security number).

Then, they said anyone who USES on such automated banking is senile - so no Guns should be owned by you

It's better in the long run to use facts, rather than fiction, when you make your arguments.

And it doesn’t work with Verizon Wireless phones.
I know, I am currently locked out of my account, because I use Verizon.

This is on purpose. The goal again is to attack white people. This will freak many out and no doubt cause some to get so worked up they die from their current medical conditions.

...and we're not going to get one, either.

They don’t need to steal your phone. Call forwarding, Soviet.

Also makes it impossible for those overseas to monitor their account, unless phone has international credits at big bucks per minute.

We got emails saying they were implementing it - sounds raciss against minorities to me - they need to get the “judges” that find such proof of who you are to vote to be unconstitutional to review this plan.....

I know cell phone providers advertise that they serve everywhere—but they lie.

Here in NW CT many of us do not have cell service at home.

So this discriminates against rural people as well—jerks.

Hmm, just managed to sign up for an online account,

You have to have a good memory and access to prior years w-2s on hand. I’d bet that most people won’t have the necessary information available at their fingertips like myself.

That isn’t fair.

Our President doesn’t even HAVE his own SS number but WE THE PEOPLE need to jump through hoops. I am not seeing any difference between the serfs working the king’s land in return for one spot of land for themselves, and us today.

I’ve been on SS since 2001 and I’ve never needed to access MY ACCOUNT (?)... What’s that all about? Guess I’m losing out on something but I don’t know what!!!

Still doesn’t explain what a SS account is - why would I want to MANAGE MY BENEFITS through SS?? Come on - what’s the secret?

“”Update (August 3, 2016): We believe that we resolved the problem that prevented some my Social Security account holders from receiving their security code text messages or entering the security code they receive. We regret any inconvenience and invite you back to take advantage of the many features that a personal my Social Security account provides. We encourage our customers who will not be able to access their personal my Social Security account without a cell phone to visit our website at www.socialsecurity.gov/agency/contact to learn about other ways to contact us to access their benefits information.

Among our fundamental responsibilities at the Social Security Administration is protecting the safety and security of the information entrusted to us. This includes personal information for millions of people who work or receive Social Security benefits and wish to access their personal information or manage their benefits with a my Social Security account.

We take our responsibility very seriously and, with that commitment, have always provided my Social Security account holders with the option of an extra layer of security: to receive a security code via a cell phone text message to complete online registration and every sign in. This type of process—requiring more than a username and password to access information—is referred to as multifactor authentication, or MFA. Read more about the new authentication process…””

I started in 2004. Like you, I’ve never accessed my SS account. Why would anyone need to do so?

If you create on-line access, you can do things like change your address of record, etc. The most important reason to create an on-line account is to prevent an identity thief from creating an account for you before you get around to doing it.

Of course, this still doesn't answer your original question. I think they created this on-line system, which does little more than expose your personal info to identity thieves, because the internet is cool; and they wanted to be cool.
