My gut feeling is that as a muslim and dealing in his job with the “natives” like he was one of them, he thought he was going over to converse with the guys who drove up to the base
and then they detonated, rather than a selfless dash to save his men (would have been higher award than BSM)
This is strictly conjecture
The Captain certainly died serving his country and may he RIP despite what his parents are doing
