Many borrowed words in the English language are spelled differently than their origin. So umma is Yiddish, and ummah is Arabic, and they mean the same thing. Difference is the Arabic meaning takes on a different connotation altogether.
But this article was in English. in English either is acceptable. Obviously, if the article were in Arabic, even the alphabet would be different.
