Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, Defend Khizr Khan's Son's Military Service and Sacrifice
ABC News ^ | July 31, 2016 | Alana Abramson

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan have both come out with statements strongly defending Capt. Humayun Khan, a Muslim-American soldier killed in combat in 2004 whose father Khizr Khan made an emotional plea against Donald Trump's candidacy at the Democratic National Convention.

The statements come after Trump's controversial response to the Khan family, and after a personal appeal from Khizr Khan to to both the Senate Majority Leader and the House Speaker to denounce the GOP nominee.

Neither McConnell nor Ryan mention Trump by name in their statements, but the repudiation of the GOP nominee is implicit in both responses.

"All Americans should value the patriotic service of the patriots who volunteer to selflessly defend us in the armed services. And as I have long made clear, I agree with the Khans and families across the country that a travel ban on all members of a religion is simply contrary to American values," McConnell wrote.

Ryan followed with a similar response. “America's greatness is built on the principles of liberty and preserved by the men and women who wear the uniform to defend it. As I have said on numerous occasions, a religious test for entering our country is not reflective of these fundamental values. I reject it.

"Many Muslim Americans have served valiantly in our military, and made the ultimate sacrifice," Ryan continued. "Captain Khan was one such brave example. His sacrifice -- and that of Khizr and Ghazala Khan -- should always be honored. Period.”

In an interview on MSNBC the day after Khizr Khan addressed the convention, he begged McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan -- both of whom he referred to as "leaders and patriots" -- to speak out against the GOP nominee, calling it a "moral imperative."

For the record, we now also have other Republicans making statements as well:

"Senator Susan Collins - "No one should criticize grieving parents who lost a son in combat. Capt Kahn was an American hero."

Kelly Ayote said that "she is "appalled" by the way Trump "disparaged" the Khans and compared the loss of their son to his sacrifices."

Linda Grahamnesty said: "If you’re going to be leader of the free world, you have to be able to accept criticism. Mr. Trump can’t. The problem is, ‘unacceptable’ doesn’t even begin to describe it."

Where are the Democrats throwing Hillary under the bus for her secret server? Where are the Democrats throwing Hillary under the bus for Benghazi? They don't do it! They circle their wagons no matter what!

Some of what Trump is being attacked for his a lie. He was ASKED by George S. if he had made any sacrifices. This was obviously a trap question. Trump should have just said that no sacrifice he made compares to what that man went through and noted that Hillary never had to make that sacrifice either. Trump tried to answer George's question at face value. George the spider lured him into his parlor and then ABC wrote a sensationalized headline. Trump called the father a nice guy and explained his position on terrorism and the ban on immigration from certain countries.

The problem for Trump was the comment of saying Hillary wrote part of what the guy said regarding the Constitution (no way to prove it) and making a comment about the mother. You won't win the court of public opinion by criticizing the Gold Star mom.

The father put himself out there and attacked the Republican nominee at the Democrat convention. The media was raving about his speech, and Trump had the right to respond. It just has to be very delicate when dealing with this situation. I said in the other thread what I would have said if I were sdvising Trump. I'll post here:

I appreciate the sacrifice that this young man made for our country. We are grateful for his service; he was a hero. I am sorry for their loss. I would like to make clear that the ban on immigration is related to countries that have a high incidence of terrorism. The United Arab Emirates is not one of those countries, and so the ban would not have affected Khan. The wall criticized is to stop illegal immigration on the Mexican border, not to keep legal immigrants like the Khan family out.

Right now, there is a problem with radical Islamic terrorism which is what Khan fought against and which is what has led to an increasing number of terrorist attacks. Hillary Clinton has not helped matters with her foreign policy. After she voted for the war to go into Iraq, she also supported pulling the troops out too soon - leading to the rise of ISIS. ISIS further spread through inept policies in Syria and Libya. The ban on immigration from countries with a high instance of terrorism is made to keep the same people that Kahn was fighting off of our shores - which is why he was fighting in the first place. It is important to ensure that the soldiers who died fighting radical Islamic terrorism, so that it did not spread and come to our shores, didn’t die in vain. Of course there are good Muslims like the Khan family, and we have to ensure with the ban from terrorist countries and proper vetting that the people who enter this country love America like the Kahn family and aren’t radical Islamic terrorists. That will make all families, including the Kahn family, safer.

Here is a link to the statement Trump put out which touches on some of the things I said:

Trump has a rally tomorrow. He'll probably talk about this, so I think it would be best if his team gets the points together they want him to say because the media will be filming this live. Stick to those points, explain disagreement with father, apologize to the mother, and I think that will help with slowing the tide of what is a gleeful media firestorm.

“””””Senator Susan Collins - “No one should criticize grieving parents who lost a son in combat. Capt Kahn was an American hero.” “”””

Tell that to the hildabeast. She trashes the Benghazi victims repeatedly.

Looks like Trump is going to have one hell of a lot of anti-American jackasses to clean out. It can be done one by one in each State by exposing their actions.

Trump for President.

Trouble is, there should have never been an Iraq War. Like Trump said, Bush lied and he knew it. (The neocons hated that remark.)

Trump should call the father and mother tonight, or invite them to meet with him. And speak from the heart to them. And NOT TELL THE MEDIA HE DID THIS.... He’s for all vets. He got sucked in again my Saggilopolous...

I can’t handle it. When I or anyone else can immediately think of better options to choose from in order to address this situation, I have little faith in someone whose response borders on the egotistically psychotic. I have been hoping to see something different, but it apparently ain’t gonna happen. Hello Hillary and goodbye USA.
