There is really no alternative unless you want to invade. And remember that Russia considers the Crimea part of Russia so it would mean war with Russia.

My day one suggestion was that Obama negotiate a deal with Russia to let the Crimea vote on whether it wants to be part of Russia in exchange for Russia’s acquiescence in the rest of the Ukraine’s independence. And Russia would be required to assume the Ukraines debt. That would have been a lot better than what we’ve got. I don’t think Obama is that kind of a wheeler dealer though.

That is it in a nutshell. Who controls Crimea is of no security interest for the U.S. For those who want to complain, call up Obama.
