It really is a terrible thing. Think about the conundrum Catholics in the pews ( including myself) are left with. This kind of talk about Islam seems heretical to me. If you have a liberal priest here in the USA ,inspired by Pope Francis, who starts preaching during a homily about how we all believe in the same God, is it not appropriate to consider this heretical. Islam denies Christ as God. How can a Christian claim that Muslims worship the same God when they deny the trinity and the divinity of Christ. I am seriously wondering if it would not be appropriate to walk out of church during such a sermon.
My own understanding, and I believe the understanding expressed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, is that those who worship the Creator of All Things worship the same God, since there is but one Creator. However, many such worshipers believe things about God which are fragmentary and garbled, deficient, distorted, or absolutely false.
Many who quote the Catechism as if it supposedly favored Islam, seem to miss this concluding paragraph:
844 "In their religious behavior, however, men also display the limits and errors that disfigure the image of God in them:
Very often, deceived by the Evil One, men have become vain in their reasonings, and have exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and served the creature rather than the Creator. Or else, living and dying in this world without God, they are exposed to ultimate despair."

Not a Catholic but I think I would walk out during such a sermon. We can always hear that kind of garbage coming from Obama without going to church. It won’t be heard at our church.
