Navy chiefs face Trident crew shortages – because recruits don’t want to log off Facebook

The Royal Navy is suffering a recruitment crisis when it comes to staffing Trident submarines - as young people are too addicted to Facebook to go off-tech for weeks at a time.

Following a vote to renew the nuclear submarines which passed through Parliament last week, those serving say that a scheme designed to attract new blood has faltered.

And a senior source says this is down to the fact that "you cannot Facebook your friends".

Last month, the annual report from the Ministry of Defences’s internal watchdog, the Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator, warned of a shortfall of qualified engineers, calling it “the principal threat to the delivery of nuclear safety”.

And those leaving are being offered incentives of up to £25,000 to stay, reports the Express .

I guess that they will just designate 1-2 days/week as "WEB Access Days" and surface?

So they’re saying that people are incapable of doing a critical job because of FACEBOOK? Perhaps “stay off of Facebook or be dishonorably discharged” would be a good incentive.

No, that’s not what the article says. It says that people are getting out because being on FB is more important than punching holes in the ocean for 75 days with no contact with the outside world. I served on SSBNs and I know what a hardship they are for the crews and the families. It is especially hard these days since deployed sailors on other ships have email, snail mail, Skype, and FB to stay in contact with the real world.

But the Boomer sailor still only has the 40 word FamilyGram with no outgoing contact.

Sounds like a good reason to draft them and send them to some place remote in Scotland, devoid of cell phone towers.

It took a little more than 8 years, but what we have now is a generation of do nothing, narcissistic special snowflakes.

You don’t get nuclear engineering qualified sailors through a draft.

I can tell you were never subject to the draft. Draftees went into the Army in my time.

Just being factual, not really picky.

The Marines got quite a few from the draft and an occasional Sailor, but yes, Majority of draftees went Army.

Of course WJClinton implied those of us that enlisted in the Navy, Marines, AF, Coast Guard etc were ‘also’ Draft-Dodgers.

In words - maybe - for the most part he may be correct but he neglected to tell his ‘audience’ that his form of ‘Draft-Dodging’ was cowardly & despicable.

My Dad got me into the Sea Cadets at age 16. I got my notice at 19 and was sent to Electronics and Sonar schools in 1966. I lucked out. Thanks Dad (RIP).
