He said they would be helped only if they had "fulfilled their obligations to us."

Ya damn right!

this should be the liberals delight:

1) scale down militarization of this nation
2) make sure people are paying their fair share
3) end the role of America being the worlds police..

they should be over themselves about this...

NATO qua EU - advice: Take care of your Muslim problem because you won’t have a NATO to whine about when your countries are Jihaded to kingdom come.

I can understand why they would be concerned. What are their obligations and why would they be worried about fulfilling them?

It’s “The Art of the Deal”. It makes perfect sense. Why should we be beholden to a bunch of ingrates? Go Trump.

NATO allies respond to Trump’s suggestion that the U.S. might not protect them from Russia

With contemporary "allies" like Turkey, NATO has degenerated into the opposite of what was its original purpose.

And the PC U.S.A continues to fund most of NATO's military security.

How stupid is that?

They cry about military spending, and when Trump proposes real, rational ways to deal with it, they scream even louder.

Exactly ! They want the USA to have defence obligations that couldn't be fulfilled if the US spent a trillion a year and had a draft.

Then they scream about a budget of 650 billion. Lying fakes !

The cold war is over and Russia won’t be attacking Europe. NATO needs to evolve.

"Trump specifically pointed to the Baltic states that sit near Russia's borders and often complain of belligerence from Moscow...For some in those in the Baltic states — Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania — the American businessman's comments provoked confusion and surprise."

Those countries are extremely poor due to having been conquered and occupied by the Russians for so long as slave satellite countries for the Soviet Union, but the rhetoric is really aimed at Poland.

You who are real Americans, think about some of your local people in high places. Do some thinking. Consider similarities (regulations, animal worship, surnames, environmentalism,...) between the policies of those local "leaders" and those of leaders of a couple of fascist nations during World War 2. It's very important that you do so. And here's some important educational material for those of you who want to be real Americans.

Except it destroys their examples of ‘a socialist state can work’ over in Europe.

You can either have a first rate military or a full welfare state. You cannot have both - and Europe will be forced to choose.

Readers, have a look at information about the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, while you’re at it. Very important and very easily found with a search engine search using that phrase!

It's really quite simple.

No more free lunch paid for by American taxpayers.

Trump want them to have skin in the game of their own defense.

"You can either have a first rate military or a full welfare state. You cannot have both - and Europe will be forced to choose."

The U.S. government debt is over $19.4 trillion in debt, not including unfunded liabilities (bloated government pensions) and high personal debts.

Leviathan (Uncle Sam employs more people than you think)
National Review ^ | 02/03/2011 | Iain Murray
"...nearly 40 million Americans employed in some way by government."

...and pensioners from the same.

Most of that spending and the civilian interest lobbies funded by it are subtracting from our defense spending.

When Turkey joined NATO, it was a secular country. Erdogan is quickly turning it into a Caliphate that would never have been allowed to join NATO.

So the idea that we are bound by treaties when the treaty partners have such internal changes is ludicrous. It would be completely bizarre for us to defend a Caliphate from Russia or anyone else.
