A federal judge ruled Thursday that a Michigan law banning straight-ticket voting would place a disproportionate burden on African Americans' right to vote, and granted a request for a preliminary injunction to block enforcement of the law.
Mark Brewer, a lawyer in the case and former head of the Michigan Democratic Party, argued that the elimination of straight-party voting would likely have a larger impact on African-American voters, noting "extremely high" correlations between the size of the African-American voting population within a district, and the use of straight-party voting in that district.

Here in New York there has never been such a thing. You have to actively vote for each candidate. You can go straight down the line, and vote Rep, Dem, Lib or Conservative party lines but there is no lever, button etc.
Yes, in Maine they use to have a big box in the upper right hand corner to vote straight ticket for everyone on the ballot. It helped moved Maine to the dem side. In 1964 in the Johnson rout of Goldwater, many republicans stayed home. Dems who were just names on the ballot woke up the next morning to find they had been elected.
Maine repealed it after, but the damage was done.
