Does he keep himself viable for a future contest, or does he flame out spectacularly?

That sir depends entirely on the currently unknown future. He could be the next Churchill, or he could just write it off and go into the private sector.

In either scenario, Clinton or Trump, the bet is that it's a 4 year stint with much controversy. After what has occurred in this election thusfar, I would not blame Ted if he took a partnership in a law firm arguing before the Supreme Court.

There is a lot of truth to that. My fear is that the controversy is contrived rather than natural, such as how the Democrats actively worked to undermine George Bush as retaliation for the 2000 election, except that this time it is Republicans fragging their own President.

I fear a GOPe that is afraid that a successful Trump weakens their own standing, so they will try to block Trump's agenda to protect their own interests.

It could be that Trump proves to be totally incompetent on his own, but I don't get that impression right now. I see a person who opens with a high bid and then negotiates down to an acceptable middle. Others only see the opening high bid as brash and incompetent, because the GOPe are used to discarding their strong cards before playing the round.
