Column: Now comes Trump 2.0

The Donald J. Trump for president campaign is on track.

Saving his most biting criticism for Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama, his gaffe-free performance of late follows a bumpy stretch where personal attacks on the media and a federal court judge hurt his campaign. The Donald's newfound discipline coincides with the departure of former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and the ascendency of new campaign top adviser Paul Manafort. Trump also deserves kudos for his choice of Mike Pence as his running mate.

His decision to pick Pence is smart on several counts. First, Pence is a serious conservative on both fiscal and social issues. That signals to the Republican base that Trump will govern as a conservative.

Second, Pence is an experienced, veteran public official with time spent governing an important state and serving in leadership in Congress. Pence is qualified and could serve as president on day one if called to do so. Trump scores an A on the only presidential-level decision a candidate gets to make before becoming president — choosing a running mate. That decision shows that despite Trump's over-the-top rhetoric he can make a sound and reasoned decision. Third, Pence opens the electoral map to a Midwest/Rust Belt strategy.

President Obama narrowly defeated Mitt Romney in states like Ohio, Iowa, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. For example, if 50,000 votes went the other way in Ohio, or 38,000 votes in Iowa, those states would have cast their Electoral College ballots for Romney.

Trump's outsider approach has the potential to bring independents, blue-collar Democrats and disaffected Republicans to his side in the Midwest, and adding "one of their own" to the ticket will only help. Look for Pence to work the region hard in the coming months.

Now that Trump is the official nominee, last night he got his 1st security briefing.

He’ll show up at the convention with no hair and “that” stunned look on his face, eyes in the 1000-mile stare.

Trump’s attacks on the media didn’t hurt his campaign one bit. The only institution regarded with more contempt than the government is journalism. Last I heard, ebola was more popular. In criticizing the press, Trump was doing what Trump does best: acting as a mouthpiece for an increasingly angry public.

And it tremendously helps Trump that Hillary Clinton--besides her penchant for attracting scandal like likes to honey--can't escape the ineptness of the Obama Presidency. The mess created by the Black Lives Matter movement and the increasingly frightening ISIS-related terrorist attacks at also driving voters to Trump in a big way.

I didn’t know that.

Trump is acting a LOT more presidential lately and it could be the new management. I am glad.

Pence was a great pick. Seems likable and looks like a trustworthy statesman.

where personal attacks on the media and a federal court judge hurt his campaign.

HAHAHAHAHA! No, they didn't. But what you expect from incompetent management?

Bob Dole says Trump owes some people an apology. He also says he needs to bring more people into the party.

I can’t stand these people. Live your remaining days as a WWII hero but shut up about the present and the future.

Trump is being Trump lately. He will win the legitimate vote overwhelmingly. That doesn’t mean, however, that he will win the election. A straw in the wind: a federal judge just ruled that states with voter ID laws have to accept anyone at the polls who simply fills out an “affidavit” that says he was unable to get a photo ID. That opens the flood gates to the illegal voters and the phantom voters and the multiple voters. Just sign a name on an additional piece of paper and go vote.

To the untrained eye maybe. This strategy has managed to cause Hillary's 50 million spending on negative ads to be wasted. He uses the media to focus on what he wants them to focus on. By doing this his competition never gets any traction. The belief that these are mistakes made without Trump weighing the cost vs benefit of each is to underestimate Trump.

I have no doubt that Trump can win overwhelmingly in Nov., if not for this type of electoral process shenanigans. They will have to steal the election, and they now it.

Second guessing Trump is an exercise in futility. Early on I cringed when Trump did some things but learned that for Trump, anything he does works for Trump. Trump has the finest sense of what works of any politician in the game, geometrically speaking.
