The post-coup crackdown in Turkey has been been swift and brutal, concerning observers that the country may be pushed closer to authoritarianism and away from democracy and the rule of law.

Some 6,000 people, mostly soldiers, have been detained on charges of high treason, and more than 2,700 judges and prosecutors were purged Sunday for alleged links to the coup plotters. Authorities issued arrest warrants for another 188 high court judges, and Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has said the ruling AKP party will consider bringing back the death penalty for perpetrators. On Monday, the government said 30 governors and 8,000 members of the police had been replaced.

Erdogan is moving quickly with a wide and deep purge of many segments of government that were his opponents.

8,000 people will shortly face a firing squad.

In response Obama and Kerry will write a sternly worded tweet condeming the injustice.

They will be lucky to face a firing squad. Death by slow torture or torture in prison for years are likely.

The Coup is what is transpiring now. The vestiges of modern secular Turkiye are being swept away in the Turkish version of the Carter triggered Iranian Revolution that toppled the Shah. Previous to this the Caliphites already had the reins of government but had not yet been able to suppress the middle class and some still loyal factions on the bench and in the military. Heads aare rolling, literally and figuratively.

How can anyone do all of that over a weekend?

Someone who had the whole thing planned before it started.

The lists and plans had to be prepared in advance. This lends credence to those who say the coup was either fake or precipitated by Erdogan's intelligence service to bring out the opponents of the government that Erdogan wanted to eliminate.

Most coups fail because one of the participants was a rat. Which generally means the person they’re trying to over throw has the list. Plus of course it always a good chance to get rid of inconvenient people who probably didn’t have anything to do with it.

Perhaps too quickly for the near victim of a surprise coup. I think he knew in advance about the coup maybe he’s even the author.

How far will it go?

Turkey will become another Islamic police state, and Erdogan will be its dictator.

After more than 10,000 arrests in just a couple days, it has become obvious that the “coup” was a total scam, and that the purge of pro-secular and pro-democracy officials and officers was carefully planned for weeks in advance.

And most of the West and media are falling in line with the standard support Erdogan and democracy line. However, there are some dissents because Erdogan is moving so broadly and openly.

Does anyone have any information about the military base? There are rumors that it is being held hostage. Our servicemen are being held hostage. Rationing food and water.

Is this true or are these rumors?

Looking for facts.

If this is true then that is an act of war. No?

This coup was staged. 100% fake. We are entering dangerous waters. Already there, actually.

According to the Incirlik FB page, normal operations have resumed. There has been some FReeper static about alleged false information, but the page looks authentic:
