Chris Christie 'relieved' Donald Trump picked a governor for running mate

He might be the runner-up, but New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Monday he's "really relieved" presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump picked a governor as his running mate, calling Mike Pence as an "outstanding" candidate.

"Mike Pence is a great guy. And I am really relieved that Donald Trump picked a governor to be his running mate. He needs someone with him who has governed, who knows how to govern," Christie said.

Speaking at a breakfast for the Michigan delegation to the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, the New Jersey Republican subtly jabbed his fellow vice presidential hopeful, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. "We don't need another big mouth from Congress, quite frankly, to go there, who's never been responsible for anything, all right? Never been responsible for producing results. What Donald needed was a partner who has governed and been responsible for results and held responsible by his people."

Christie, who was reportedly Trump's gut choice for running mate, suppressed any frustration with Trump's decision, calling the businessman a "friend" and "extremely generous," and praising Pence.

Yeah, but he’s not a full-term Governor.

How much more of a jerk could Christie be?

Every time I think he’s stooped to the lowest level of grace possible, he stoops even lower.

Christie's an aggressive Northeasterner ....like Donald.

Donald needed the stolidness of a laid-back conservative....the Midwestern Pence. They're a good fit.

I love thinking about the bombastic, boisterous Donald surrounded by beautiful bikini-clad women.....b/c you know the married Pence probably never looked at a woman salaciously in his entire life.

It doesn't matter who the VP is. I just hope that Trump keeps both Newt and Christie in his inner circle of advisers because they both have experience he can tap if needed.

Christie should not have bashed Gingrich. We have more than enough of that here.

Neither Christie nor Gingrich made much sense, although I would have of course trusted Trump to choose the best VP after a thorough and heartfelt vetting process. But you know what:

Christie is necessary for Attorney General, to unravel the damage Obama has done.

Gingrich is too old (two Septuagenarians??), he hasn't done anything productive for a few years, and he shoots from the lip.

Lt. General Flynn is going to be full-time busy setting up plans to defeat ISIS and turn the military around.

How does Trump even try to clean up the cesspool that is the US Senate without Sessions still there?

A lot of the other possibilities are young and don't have a track record of accomplishing a lot. So, yeah, Pence makes sense. JMHO

First he was upset and now he’s relieved. Come on, Christi, you’re flip flopping already.

The story about Trump wanting Christie but his kids wanting Pence is plausible.

He is seriously taking the advice of his children and not just going with whatever he wants. I can see him wanting Christie.

If you read the article about Christie's original reaction, carefully, you would see that the reaction is being exaggerated by the choice of words--a ploy to try and create dissension on our side.

Don't let them distract us into a self-defeating exchange among ourselves. They are going to try that over and over again, between now and November.

I think you nailed it, grania.

Christie is needed for AG, to clean up the mess. Anybody who isn’t pardoned, and maybe some who are, will face the wrath.

General Flynn, same thing. Big mess to clean up.

Newt might make a good chief of staff, to keep Trump on a war footing when it comes to making drastic changes.

I wonder who Trump is considering for SecState, Treasury, UN, and a host of other positions. What is Allen West doing these days?

“Christie is necessary for Attorney General”

Christie wold probably make a decent AG, but there’s probably those who he’d need to be prosecuting that ‘have the goods’ on him. Perhaps one of the reasons he was passed over for VP as well. I highly doubt one becomes or remains governor of NJ without engaging in at least some illegal activities. I’d rather have more of a political outsider for AG.
