In the 1970’s I lived in Manhattan. I had a neighbor who worked for in a hospital for the mentally ill. When they were released they were given the opportunity to be given a one way ticket to California. A lot of them took it.

IIRC, it was Mike Royko that named California the Granola State for that very reason.
