Occam’s Razor is leaning heavily in that direction.
In World War II just one percent of the pilots shot down 50% of the enemy planes. This means 99% of the pilots shot down the other 50% of the downed enemy planes. Many times pilots of both sides lined up a shot and either didn’t fire or missed on purpose. Many people simply can’t bring themselves to pull the trigger and kill somebody. I increasingly suspect this was a fake coup by Erdogan to give him excuse to eliminate his opposition.

It appears they choked. As well as the guys in the tanks; imagine allowing the mobs to stop your tanks and pull you out and kill you. They clearly were not resolute in their coup efforts. Gee, something you surely don’t want to start if you don’t mean to win.
