'Democratic order must be respected' in Turkey: Germany

Germany said democratic institutions in Turkey “must be respected”, as a military coup attempt against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was under way, the spokesman for Chancellor Angela Merkel said Saturday.

“The democratic order must be respected,” Steffen Seibert tweeted. “Support to the elected (Turkish) government,” he added. “Everything must be done to protect human lives.” […]

Meanwhile, the German foreign ministry urged its citizens in Turkey to exercise “the greatest caution” and avoid crowds and public places. …

If current news is to be believed, this coup attempt might be complicated. The claims that the cleric responsible for it is in exile in Pennsylvania have not been effectively denied.

How can we be sure the US wasn't in some way mischief-making? Everywhere else, that was the case.

Turkey will not become an Islamic hell hole with advanced arms. The coup has been put down and most of it’s leaders arrested.

The leaders of the coup were true patriots

The elevation of Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the post of Present of Turkey was at least as “democratic” as the installation of Adolf Hitler as Chancellor of Germany in 1933. What was done after assuming office has been anything but democratic, involving repressions of ethnic minorities, confrontations with foreign powers over relatively minor disputes, aiding and assisting in the hustling of floods of refugees as an offensive move against those nations with which there are some disagreements, and demands that certain conditions be met without any concessions on the part of the government of which he is the titular head.

Between Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Bashar al-Asssad, Erdogan is much the worse despot.

Bull.

That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government,

There is no special magic that makes an elected government incapable of becoming tyrannical.

For the "just wait until the next election" nitwits, by the time the next election arrives they can have changed things so there is no way of voting them out of power.

There are elections all over the place. Perhaps 50% of them result in electing a government who has any interest in preserving "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" for the governed. And only governments who are in pursuit of those ends have any validity.

Elected or otherwise.

When I first heard about the coup, I thought that it was analogous to Al Sisi's overthrow of the Muslim Brotherhood, i.e. a secularist military revolt against an increasingly Islamist government in Ankara.

However, the reality is much murkier than that - it isn't secularist vs. Islamist so much as a power struggle among two factions, neither of which is especially secular or anti-Islamist.
