The Turkish military claims to have taken over after Turkey's PM said a military faction had been involved in an attempted coup.
In a statement read out on Turkey's NTV television, the army said: "Power in the country has been seized in its entirety."
According to Sky sources, state TV has been stormed by the military and staff have been asked to hand in their mobile phones.
A Turkish state news agency is reporting that a top general is among several people being "held hostage" at the military headquarters in Ankara.
NTV is showing footage of tanks at the entrance to Istanbul's Ataturk airport.
It is reported that all flights have been cancelled in and out of the airport.
Military vehicles are said to be blocking two bridges in Istanbul, while military jets have been heard flying over the Turkish capital, Ankara.
According to Turkish media, the military statement said the army had taken action to: "reinstall the constitutional order, democracy, human rights and freedoms, to ensure that the rule of law once again reigns in the country, for the law and order to be reinstated."
The military statement went on to say that "all international agreements and commitments will remain. We pledge that good relations with all world countries will continue."

But nothing happens to the hornets’ nest — Saudi Arabia.
If they kill ISIS, I’m all for it.
Guess they have their own Baghdad Bob:

BREAKING NEWS: TURKISH INTEL AGENCY SPOKESMAN SAYS THE COUP ATTEMPT IS ALMOST BEING SUPPRESSED, IT WILL BE ALL OVER UNTIL MORNING.
The world is heading toward conflagration at breakneck speed. Obama’s “leadership,” along with that of his European leftist allies like Merkel, Cameron and Hollande, has destabilized the world in a manner not seen since the outset of WW2.
A regime that supported ISIS financially and bought their oil and was strongly tied o the muslim brotherhood and obama has been taken down.
Let’s be happy for an hour.
“reinstall the constitutional order, democracy, human rights and freedoms, to ensure that the rule of law once again reigns in the country, for the law and order to be reinstated.”
Perhaps our generals should observe this.
Obama should get another Nobel Peace Prize.
United States Armed Forces - take note
Other countries seem to be willing to take strong measures to rid themselves of their Islamist leaders . How about us ?
So why can’t we have one of those over here?
His Arrogance must be severely disappointed. Erdogan has been pushing Turkey to become the head of the new Caliphate for years.
Nothing like a good old-fashioned Turkish military reset.
Maybe this time they can rename Istanbul back to Constantinople or even Byzantium. Istanbul sounds so halal-y.
Brexit looking like a little bit smarter move right about now.
Positive events though. This, BRexit, Russia kicking ISIS’ butt. Egypt was a good thing too.
I know it sounds crazy, but that Germany always wants its way and that potshot the German defense minister took at England was below the belt.
Cameron is gone and Hollande will be soon. Germany and Merkel stand defiant in the face of much needed change.
Bad recipe.
Next time fire all your military leaders and replace them with women, homosexuals and transsexuals.
A rookie mistake.

Sad when, the last decade, i root for Russians and Turks. Why can’t our military dispose of our Islamist within our govt? They are a clear and present danger to our country.
Many in Turkey have been hoping for this. A great many are unhappy with the fundamentalist road that has been taken.
