China's down but not out, and the Philippines' Duterte knows it

If you'd randomly turned on a TV in Manila early evening yesterday, you'd probably have caught a rather dour gentleman named Perfecto Yasay telling viewers "restraint and sobriety" were the most important requirements of the moment.

Without any other context, you might have thought he was delivering a eulogy. Maybe after some kind of upsetting murder, or after the country's notorious death squads ran amok.

But Yasay is the Philippine Foreign Secretary, and he was delivering his country's first official response to a ruling on his country's challenge of China's claim to pretty much all of the South China Sea.

Duterte is pro China and just said he favors bilateral negotiations with China, effectively shutting the US out.

He recently called Xi a “great leader”.

He has also said he has “hatred for the US”

Wasn’t there a movement trying to get the US to rush back to Clark airfield and Subic Bay to scare off China?

Wouldn’t happen anyway. Old Clark airbase is now an international airport with hotels and duty free stores all over the old base. Pretty much the same with Subic. While we could still use the facilities there, its a far cry from what people think when they think of the old Clark and Subic.
