As military-grade robotics get cheaper and more capable, someone will arm them and put them on American streets.
Robot-maker Sean Bielat says he’s fine with the Dallas Police Department’s apparently unprecedented use of a bomb-disposal robot to kill a gunman on Thursday. “A robot was used to keep people out of harm’s way in an extreme situation,” said Bielat, the CEO of Endeavor Robotics, a spinoff of iRobot’s military division. “That’s how robots are intended to be used.”
Joergen Pedersen, the CEO of RE2 robotics and the chairman of the National Defense Industrial Association’s robotics division concurred. “If these robots are used in manners for which they were unintended, we would expect that the officers who are there to keep citizens and themselves safe would use good judgment where the application of lethal force is a last resort,” he said.
On Sunday, speaking to Face the Nation, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings blessed the operation. “The chief had two options and he went with this one. I supported him completely because it was the safest way to approach it,” he said.
But some ethicists are worried.

I guess everything will be fine until the point where they become self-aware.
“I guess everything will be fine until the point where they become self-aware.”
Who? The robots or the police bureaucracy?
bbbbb......bbbu......bbb.....bbbbbut how are they going to be able to incorporate that RAAAAAAACIST algorithm in it’s programming?
I’m not a fan of police over-militarization.
But, recent events have proven the need for strong tactical training and equipment.
A friend is the weapons trainer for a small city department. They have a few full automatic rifles in their arsenal. He said he doesn’t foresee the need for them, but they have them and train on them just in case.
Rolling the SWAT Team to break up a poker game is stupid. Having a SWAT Team to deal with a major attack is only prudent.
Using a robot to deliver a package of C-4 to a guy who has already killed and injured a dozen officers is prudent and wise. I doubt you’ll see this tactic become frequently used.
Don’t see much of a chance here. Conservatives are sticklers for rule of law. If it says “A,” then it’s “A.” And that is what a robot is capable of. Liberals live on the edge by trying to determine intent through feelings and not through facts. Robots do not have feelings. They are not capable of handling situations like the liberals would want. Look at the email incident. Legally, she’s as guilty as sin of a high crime. But it ended up she was sloppy, so she was not unlawful. We feel sorry for her so she walks even though it is an excuse that should probably keep her off the ballot. Who can you trust to do the job right if we can’t trust her to stupidly handle sensitive information at any level and puts her supermarket list mixed in with nuclear information? But she is.
red
the weapon for the robots should be twin semi automatic 12 guage shot guns
That’s fine with me.
Remove the vermin and save the robot.
In this case, I assume they didn’t have one so duct taping some C-4 with a remote detonator or something works too.
I hope they printed a copy of the oft used “Well, Bye” graphic to tape on the robot.
” Look at the email incident. Legally, shes as guilty as sin of a high crime. But it ended up she was sloppy, so she was not unlawful.”
Look at that ! Two wrongs DO make a right !
Maybe they can get Elon Musk to share his self-driving car technology. What could possibly go wrong?
I’m very anti-militarization of the police. But war has been declared on them, so they need to respond.
That’s how I bridge the gap from where I felt two weeks with how I feel now.
I don’t need to be militarized either. But when someone actually declares open war against me - and starts their attack then yes.. I need militarized.
If Veterinarian Assistants decided to shoot up Walmart Greeters then I think Walmart Greeters should militarize.
Everyone sees this as a police tactic, but it won’t be long before the bad guys are using similar technologies. You want to send live cops up against a jihad robot with a bomb?
>>Im not a fan of police over-militarization
Me neither. But a robot can be a safe go-between at a traffic stop, like an ATM or automated checkout lane in the grocery store. It can roll up, collect your license and registration and roll back to the cop. It can also get a camera on the car so the cop can look for warning signs before he walks up to talk to the driver.
Of course, once we have them, the boot-lickers will insist that the cop robot is now an “officer” and if you bump one, you are guilty of assault on a law enforcement officer.
It really boils down to motive. Is all this militarization for police safety or is it designed to teach Americans to be submissive to every uniform they encounter?
