That makes sense. I knew he was out of state and was surprised not to see him make a public statement in the immediate aftermath.

I wish him well.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming?

He thought, because he was governor, he could step out of bounds in Yellowstone?

When you have nerve damage, you don't realize the water is too hot. Even putting your hand in the water might not recognize water hot enough to cause a burn with prolonged submersion.

these burns used to be more common in the past, even in hospitals, from baths or even hot water bottles, especially with diabetics, the elderly, and babies. Paraplegics like the governor are also at risk.

I’ll guess he lowered himself into a bath of some kind and did not immediately realize the water was scalding hot.

Another website says he still has some sense of touch in his legs, even though he was paralyzed in 1984 when a tree fell on him while he was jogging.

It is entirely possible that this happened in one of those “sit in” new “walk-in” tubs. I would guess that he had no feeling in his paralyzed legs and could have simply turned the hot water on without balancing it with the cold supply.

He would not have noticed the pain until it was too late.

God’s speed, my friend and Governor!

Home brewing beer? Crab boil pot? Burns are the worst pain, I’m told, hope he recovers.

First, do not make fun of our Governor. Best thing to ever happen to Texas right now.

Hopefully he will support leaving the cesspool and support the #TEXIT movement. I believe he supports secession but it is the timing he has to get right.

I am not sure how much feeling he has in his legs from being a cripple in that wheelchair. Not sure what nerve damage he has but infection from burns has to be looked out for.

In which case, maybe it isn’t as painful for him now as it would be for anyone else.

“First, do not make fun of our Governor.” I”m not making fun of him at all. There are indeed beer brewing accidents, a 5 gal pot of boiling water can cause damage.

Unlikely that he received 3rd degree burns from hot water.

1st degree - (think of a scald or sunburn) Redness, swelling, fairly painful

2nd degree - (think, putting your hand on a hot stove), redness, swelling, blistering, very painful

3rd degree - (think, charring of the skin) extensive damage done to the skin. Usually not all that painful (at least initially) because of the nerve damage.

So....3rd degree from water? Unlikely.

Hotsprings? Yellowstone just down the road.

Beer brewing burns are horrible, because the molasses/malt in the water makes it stick like napalm.

a 5 gal pot of boiling water can cause damage.

Now it is damage and before it was pain. I guess you do know what you were doing.

Gov Abbot doesn’t “ step” anywhere. He is paralyzed from the waist down and has been for many years because a tree fell on him.

To expand on what you said, paraplegics (and quads) present with issues making treatment more complicated than a “normal” (for lack of a better word) burn patient. Losing the use of one’s legs is more than post injury rehab to adjust to life in a wheelchair.

One example is skin integrity. I doubt a layperson understands skin integrity beyond ‘grandma has a bedsore because the nursing home left her in bed all of the time.’

Maintaining skin integrity is a daily, life long concern for a paraplegic. Anything which interferes skin integrity, any breakdown, opens the door to secondary complications. It doesn't take much in the best of circumstances. A small red area over a pressure point can go from bad to worse in a very short period of time.

“Now it is damage and before it was pain. I guess you do know what you were doing. “

One of the brew clubs I belong to had an EMT come in and talk about mishaps he had seen. It’s all fun and games until a carboy breaks and 212 degree water washes over your sandals.

We won’t know what happened to the governor for a while, I was jus’ speculating. Hope he’s OK.
