TOKYO — Japan prides itself on having a low tolerance for guns and drugs, but a tiny political party has become the first to adopt an election plank of scrapping a research ban on medical use of marijuana.
Proponents say such use could ease cancer-related pain, prevent dementia and cut soaring medical costs. But the government says its effectiveness has not been proved, and worries about the social harm weaker controls could bring.
Japan outlaws owning and growing marijuana, besides the ban on clinical research, despite a trend in advanced countries, such as Canada and the United States, to free up medical use.
“Faced with this sharp gap between Japan and the rest of the world, the public is at a loss which to believe,” said Saya Takagi of the New Renaissance Party, founded by a former member of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s ruling party.

Don’t know how this will go over other than the Japanese are REALLLLLLLLY strict about marijuana.
Tell me about it . My friend came back to Japan from Cambodia and supposedly forgot that he still had some pot in a small baggie in his luggage - about enough to make one joint . Dogs sniffed his bags at Narita , bags were searched , pot found , and then he and his Japanese wife were arrested . He was in jail about a month or so , and the wife just a few days . This was 4-5 years ago mind you .

Coincidentally , my buddy who got arrested was ex-Navy !
Some idiot sent weed to himself at the gaijin house I was staying at and the cops busted down my door at 5AM looking for any american there, lol. Showed them my ID and everything was ok.
On a similar note, my favorite Japanese author, Ramo Nakajima, was busted for weed and sentenced to 18 months. It was a couple of grams.
AFAIK, it wasn't prohibited at any time in human history until the Progessives came along.
Up until 2002 magic mushrooms were still legal in Japan . I used to order them on the internet ( taken in strict moderation )
