Anti-Trump Virginia delegate hopes ruling sends message

A Virginia delegate to the GOP national convention who opposes Donald Trump’s presidential campaign is hoping a favorable ruling on a legal challenge to state election law will serve as a last-minute spark to help dump the billionaire businessman as the party’s nominee.

Carroll Correll Jr. said Thursday outside a federal courthouse in Richmond that he hopes an upcoming ruling will send a message to other Republican delegates that they are free to pick someone besides Trump.

“As a party and as a nation, we could do a lot better than Donald Trump,” Correll said.

The Republican National Committee’s national convention is less than two week away, and Trump is the party’s presumptive nominee. But a diverse group of Trump opponents is still trying to find a way for the party to pick someone else.

In Correll’s case, he — with the backing of a nonprofit called the Citizens in Charge Foundation — is challenging a heretofore obscure part of Virginia election law that Correll says mandates all Virginia’s delegates to vote for Trump at the convention or face potential criminal charges.

Then he should resign as a delegate. The article states that Virginia law mandates that delegates need to vote for the winner of the election.

There is a picture of him at the link.

He most definitely should and since Cruz is making peace with Trump this type of activity is going to get discouraged.

I hope there is a list of all these people. I would love to see their careers and lives ruined for their foolishness.

The voters choose the delegates they want to carry their voice and will forward. For a voter-chosen delegate to turn and betray the voters is the same as lying, such delegates are liars and traitors.

.
“...As fellow TBE contributor, Mick Staton, has repeatedly pointed out, even if Correll is successful it does not change the RNC’s rules for binding delegates.”

This has always befuddled me.

In my naiveté, I always presumed that delegates represented the will of those people they represent. They were selected based on their honor to represent us honestly and fairly.

Not to be carpetbaggers, ignoring the will of the people, like our current commander in Chief Obummer

Perhaps they want Hildabeast, for 4 more years of the same, perhaps this country cannot stand 4 more years.

Is there any truth in stories I see on newsweek and BI saying after Trump wins he might just quit?

what was all the talk months ago of which ever candidate won the state or such, “THEIR” delegates got slated to attend the convention.

seems that was some fancy talk, since some folks slated to attend don’t seem to be pro Trump in Trump won areas?

These self-serving egomaniacs need to retreat to their secure fortresses. The nation needs to heal, yet they're still spitting in the face of Republican primary voters.

As you stated, they're delegates. These freaks need to read the dictionary. They don't represent themselves; they vote to express the will of the voters they represent.

I'm wondering why they aren't charged with breach of contract. Didn't they sign something that expresses their function?

Are you some kind of troll? Is it human nature for a man like Trump to achieve the top spot in world history and just flip it away? Is it human nature for ANY human to do that?

I know but my question is why would they even ask him that question. What do they think this is some kind of game or something?
I think it’s gonna be a long hot violent summer and Trump will win in a landslide because people want a real leader. People want a leader not afraid to say yes it’s Islamic Terrorism.

We did this after the Bush-Gore election, where big government liberals wanted to change the rules after the fact. Now the big government liberals in the republican party are making the same case for changing the rules.

The answer in this election is still the same as in 2000. That year’s general election and this year’s primaries were conducted under clear rules. The 2000 vote counts and this year’s delegates obligations should be decided under the laws that were in effect on the dates of the elections. Any delegate who is unwilling to fulfill that legal obligation and moral commitment should resign and ask for an alternate to do the job. It’s that simple.

I would like to see some non-Trump delegates stand up for doing the right thing. This is the time for Cruz (who has the most non-Trump delegates) to stand up and speak for the principle of bound delegates following their pledge. I know some are skeptical, but I am hoping Ted Cruz will do the right thing, whether out of sincere values or in return for Trump’s pledge to put him on the Supreme Court (where I wanted to see him to begin with).

“The Art of the Deal” - it’s well past time for Trump to start making deals with his delegates, with other delegates, and with some of the other candidates.
