The Republican-controlled Senate failed to advance legislation defunding sanctuary cities and increasing minimum punishments for previously-deported illegal aliens caught breaking back into the U.S. on Wednesday, gaining only 53 and 55 votes, respectively; 60 were needed to proceed w/both bills.
Sponsored by Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Pat Toomey, bill would have stripped funding from jurisdictions refusinh to cooperate w/federal immigration authorities when arresting illegal aliens suspected of committing further crimes and work to prevent lawful deportation proceedings. Immigration enforcement advocates have called Kates Law, introduced by Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, mainly symbolic, with Center for Immigration Studies president Mark Kirkorian stating: Reentry after deportation is already a felony and the problem is that Obamas Justice Department seldom prosecutes offenders.
A Mexican illegal alien who had been deported five times previously allegedly used stolen federal agents gun to fire few shots, one of which struck Steinle as she walked with her father July 16, 2015 along a San Francisco pier. Snip But many Republicans in Congress have adopted the deeply unpopular position that the U.S. should only go through the motions of securing the border, while at the same time importing hundreds of thousands of so-called refugees from hellish, war-torn countries and ramp up the inflow of Muslim immigration. This position is passionately espoused by Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan, who insists limiting Muslim immigration is not what this country stands for as he sends his little children to a Catholic school free from Muslim child rape gangs, sharia law, and terrorism.
The votes come as presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton promises to dissolve national borders within 100 days of taking office and presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump pledge to enforce immigration law and build wall to stem the massive, lucrative flow of drugs and trafficked humans across the U.S.-Mexico border.

Just more proof that the republican party is part of the elite. Uniparty for all....whether you like it or not!
This is a misleading headline. The democrats voted this down since the democrats wouldn’t vote for cloture. The democrats killed this bill not the republican controlled senate.
You sat on your ass voting for it.
Enjoy it. :)
This is a bad headline; a majority of the Senate did vote in favor of both bills. In fact 53 senators voted in favor of one and 55 in favor of the other. The GOP has 54 senators.
The headline would have made more sense being written as Democrats use Senate rules to block the will of the people.
You are not correct. All but one republican voted for this except graham and lee who were not at the senate...overseas. All other republicans voted for this, it was the democrats that voted this down by not granting cloture.
Miserable libtards
Agreed, however, comments about Paul Ryan are interesting—he was opposed as it would clog the courts?!?!
Also interesting how there are always Republicans to peel off to pass a bill, but never Dems....

. All other republicans voted for this, it was the democrats that voted this down by not granting cloture.
And all repubs knew the dems would. Theater nothing more.
Didn’t want loss of this bill to get lost in the shuffle.
So how again does that make them rinos? They did what they could. Unless they have 60 votes for cloture they can’t pass this bill
Pathetic.
Good thing we got rid of Harry Reid.
Ryan: Well, first of all, the guy shouldnt have been here in the first place if we actually enforced our immigration laws. Thats point one. Point two: we have to take after sanctuary cities. We have to deal withand weve been doing this through the appropriations processwe have to deal with cities that are openly defying our immigration laws because that gives safe haven to people like thisso thats point one, two. Point three: what we have to figure out is how do we write Kates Law so that were not clogging up our jails so much for, say, DUI, but for the true violent criminals?
We need to get the details right so that we actually are going after the people that are doing this.
Trust me, you know were frustrated about this.
SICKENING!
More proof (and no more is needed) that the Rs are the other branch of the Uniparty.
I honestly now believe that if they had 60 they would not have brought it up. How long ago was that poor girl killed in SF? Nothing until now? And with all that time they couldnt find anyone who would cross party lines for the good of common Americans? They are either in on it (corrupt) or incompetent. Either way it leaves us common Americans screwed.
And dont even get me started on the other half of the uniparty. Not one willing to cross for the good of America? Not a single one?
I am now under the impression that they have it all figured out before hand and it is all theater. I understand that I may not see things the same as most people but I have to call them as I see them.
Didn’t Harry Reid discard the 60-vote rule when the Dems controlled the Senate? Why do the Republicans insist on playing by the rule book when they are in a street fight with the criminal organization known as the Democratic Party?
