Actually, the "praise" sounded a lot like the Leftist critique of the Iraq War, i.e., although a bad guy, Saddam maintained order and kept the religious fanatics in place, and we were better off with him in power. So the NYT is damning Trump for comments very similar to what the Left has been saying for the last ten years.

What I do love about Trump is that he speaks his mind and he defends himself from the press. I have to say this Nytimes article is about the most biased piece of journalism I have ever seen. I listened to the speech and he didn’t ramble or panic. He just talked about the situation in a sincere way.

As shown below, the "Great Seal of the United States", as depicted on the back of the one dollar bill, arranges the 13 stars representing the original 13 colonies/states in a pattern which forms the six-pointed "Star of David" (as can be clearly seen when that pattern is carefully observed with your eyes).
