First trip to Rio we left the airport headed for downtown. I was not impressed. Every lagoon in the area was an actual cesspool. I failed to see the romance or attraction of Rio. NEVER venture more than a block, maybe two, off the beach. I stayed at the Copa every trip as the office was just two blocks away and the Sofitel sucked. Really cool to see all the stars pictures in the mezzanine area. I learned not to go out the back entrance, prefer a room on the beach side or side but not on the back of the hotel since it was just too noisy from the street.
Maybe it has gotten better, that was 14 or so years ago.
