An unnamed Turkish official confirmed for Reuters news agency the attackers' countries of origin after Turkish media reports.
Some agencies named one of the men as Osman Vadinov, said to have crossed into Turkey from the IS stronghold of Raqqa in Syria in 2015.
Reports that he was a Chechen have been denied by an unnamed police source in the North Caucasus, Russia's Interfax news agency reports.
IS has long recruited members from mainly Muslim parts of the former USSR, with at least 2,200 believed to have come from Russia alone, according to a report last year.

Yildirim said the three men had wanted to pass through the security system but on seeing the controls "took their weapons out of their suitcases and opened fire at random at the security check".
One attacker detonated his explosives downstairs in the arrivals terminal, Turkish officials said.
The second went upstairs and set off his explosives there while the third waited outside as passengers fled. He then detonated his explosives, causing the most casualties.

I remember Borat said people from Uzbekistan are a-holes.
They shot down the Russian plane.
Maybe Putin is getting the last word, while keeping it deniable.
And Erdogan knows it, and agrees to let IS take the blame. Probably even the shooters thought IS was pulling their string.
Uzbeks - They are the weak link in the great chain of socialism.
Hmmmmm. We know Russia will always want to destabilize Turkey. I smell Pootie.
I don’t know if I really think what I said in post #4. Its just odd that IS would attack Turkey, when that is their primary source of support.
Nationality does not matter to Islamists.
Jihadis only care about doing Allah’s will.
Gee whiz, suicide bombing Moos killing Moos in Istanbul, collapsing Turk stability, tourism, economy and credibility, joyfully reported as "Russian" by the BBC.
Maybe Erdogan screwed up and will take the EU with him, so sad.
Yup.
Islam is the oldest surviving movement for establishment of a one world government.
Their country of origin is not important. Whether they are mohammedans or not is.
And they are...
Good one!
But, as an aside, I think this is the money quote from the article:
“the third waited outside as passengers fled. He then detonated his explosives, causing the most casualties”.
Right Russians aint known to be suicide Bombers! I believe they want to go home at the end of the day to their families just like US!
Uzbeks! Don’t give them money or matches!
I was deployed there & they seemed OK. The guys offered vodka for the latest Playboy, and the gals dressed as they pleased, including bare midriffs when it was 110+ degrees. Most Uzbeks are secular about Islam except those in the IMU. Kyrgyz the same way.
I suspect Chechens in the Instanbul airport massacre. Is Pooty-poot involved? Sending terrorists is cheaper than sending MiGs, and far more deniable. This was a shot across Erdogan’s bow, IMO.
Tells you what kind of enemy we are up against.
I was in Afghanistan right across the border where Tohir Yuldashev and his fighters were living. What a screaming maniac. We got shelled by that group on almost a daily basis. Supposedly the best trained of the groups running around Wana, but they were crummy shots with the mortars.
Not according to the Chechen terrorist-supporters here on FR.
If I had money, and I gambled, I would have bet thousands of dollars that they were adherents of mohammedanism.
