Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is sometimes portrayed as not fully understanding the realities struggling families face. And to some extent, her perceived lack of empathy has undercut a campaign in which she has struggled to convince voters that she is working in their interests.
The issue re-emerged Tuesday, when the former secretary of state, speaking during a visit to a technology company in Denver, briefly talked about the schools she visited during her two-plus decades in politics.
She outlined a "test" for the quality of the classrooms she saw one that few parents might be in a position to administer.
"When I used to visit schools, I would have what I call the 'Chelsea Test,'" she said, referencing her daughter, Chelsea Clinton. "In other words, would I send Chelsea to this school?"
In some cases the answer would be yes, Clinton said, remembering how some of the schools she visited were incredibly impressive.
"Some were absolutely not, and no child should go to these schools," she added.
Clinton joked that now, as a grandmother, the test has shifted to whether or not she'd send her grandchildren to the schools she visits. She lamented that the divide was "heartbreaking," adding that "we can no longer tolerate that."
But her comments tugged at something she's been criticized for in the past the appearance of a false compassion delivered from a place of privilege.
While Clinton's daughter attended the famed Sidwell Friends School where President Barack Obama's daughters currently attend and where children of many other former presidents attended most families don't have the luxury of asking whether the school zoned for their community is good enough for their children, let alone a private school with high tuition fees.
She quickly returned to the larger technology narrative that was the subject of her brief remarks.

Chelsea at the Mann Magnet School in Little Rock
Sidwell Friends School tuition. $38,000.
Washington, DC, public school spending per student: $29,000+
And still, they are dumb as stumps.
DemocRATs have run the DC schools forever, but precious Chelsea was much too good for them.
Yikes! So much. For so little. And not in a good way.
-—So much. For so little.——
Such a statement indicates misunderstanding
The education sustem is for the educators, not the students
Year in and year out it’s liberals like Hillary who preside over the education system that does nothing about substandard schools. Amazing how liberals aren’t held to account by the people they hurt.
Liberals do a bang-up job of ruining things, blaming others, then getting their dim-witted voting base to buy their excuses hook, line and sinker.
We all know the goal of leftists is to destroy the educational system, not improve it.
Ugly as a mud fence.
Ugly as homemade soap.
Immediately behind the young Chelsea is a ^butch^ AR/SP with a GUN in her pack.
As Rush likes to say, “Do NOT doubt me on this.”
Would you send your child to a DC public school if you didn’t have to?
As are Malia and Sasha.
Didn’t she once say that the below average schools should be closed?
She was implying that all schools should be ‘above average’ ... showing she is math impaired.
no, of course not, but I’m not a Democratic Party politician responsible for the disaster of the urban public schools....
They inflict the nightmare upon others but then many/most of them flee to suburban schools or (more likely) private schools.
Strictly speaking, you are right, of course. But I’ve worked at companies where the policy was to cull the employee herd of bottom performers every year. You didn’t want to be in the bottom 15th percentile unless you were angling for a severance package.
Didnt she once say that the below average schools should be closed?
######################################################
Indeed she did and yes she’s math impaired. It’s much worse than misspelling potato.
If Trump said something that stupid the MSM would still be reporting it.
As long as the schools are controlled by the federal government, no matter which party is in control, nothing will change.
