The foreign ministers of France and Germany are due to reveal a blueprint to effectively do away with individual member states in what is being described as an “ultimatum”.

Under the radical proposals EU countries will lose the right to have their own army, criminal law, taxation system or central bank, with all those powers being transferred to Brussels.

So the powers that define a modern nation state, monopoly on the use of force, taxation, and control of national borders, will be shifted to Brussels. That means the member states will become nothing more than departments of France following orders from Paris. The UK really escaped just in time. Time for Eastern Europe to go and form some sort of revived Hapsburg Empire.

When governments get shaken up, they talk tough. Maybe they react emotionally, but they’re trying to reassert their control. I’d be surprised if this plan really gets anywhere. There’s already too much agita about Greece and the Euro. And the other countries really don’t trust Germany or want to give it any more power.
