When I was a kid [well that’s some 80 years ago] the pound would cost $5. The story would be how much England has declined with some combination of war and inflation.

The story would be how much England has declined with some combination of war and inflation.But there were times when it was much lower against the dollar. I remember an exchange rate of 3 pounds for one dollar in the mid-60s. It was a great time to visit Carnaby Street.
