Commodore? I didnt think the USN used that title/rank anymore.A senior Captain, usually on track for Admiral, with more than one ship under his overall command. (My memory)
Wiki: An American commodore, like an English commodore or a French chef d'escadre, is but a senior captain, temporarily commanding a small number of ships, detached for any special purpose. He has no permanent rank, recognized by government, above his captaincy; though once employed as a commodore, usage and courtesy unite in continuing the title.

Commodore is a courtesy title. The official title of the officer commanding multiple ships might have been “Commander, Destroyer Squadron 6”. We called him the Commodore. He wore the uniform of a Captain.

I was enlisted. Never heard a Captain being referred to as Commodore. We had at least one aboard for several months when I served. I was 19 then and don't remember the circumstances, but I remember pulling sideboy duty to greet his arrival.

Wasn’t the original plan to let the boss have a pass and make his deputy take the fall? The deputy must not have been on board with that.

I was in the navy from 1966-1970 and I never heard a captain called a commodore either.
I have heard lower ranked officers called captain though, if they commanded a ship.

They’ve given enough Navy commanders the axe over political issues during the reign of King Obamaboomba to lead two or three third-world navies.

Commodore is a position. A senior captain designated to act as flag officer in a temporarY capacity, like a cruise/deployment. I think in the late-70’s the rank Commodore,O-7 was briefly revived but quickly changed to Rear Admiral, Lower Half... the most god-awful and awkward sounding rank/title of all time.

Hopefully the Captain will get out of the navy and tell the truth.

Previously, it was a rank. I didn’t realize it was converted from a rank to a title.
I knew it could be reassigned as a rank in time of war, or at least, that’s what I remember.
