The US has been warned about its high poverty rate in the International Monetary Fund's annual assessment of the economy. The fund said about one in seven people were living in poverty...

In the early 1800's, Alexis de Toqueville toured the United States and observed that, despite the wealth of opportunity available in the new country, about one in seven families lived in comparative poverty -- because they chose not to pursue those opportunities, but to live on scraps and leavings.

Over time and even today, fifty-plus years of the War on Poverty behind us, about one in seven families are subject to the same self-imposed restrictions.

Well, there’s the rub. Poverty is based on the prevailing standard of living in each country (or locality even). So if it’s a poor country, you have to be REALLY poor to be considered to be in “poverty”, but in a rich country like the US you can be quite comfortable and still be in “poverty”.

So you can’t compare the poverty rates between countries, because the way they are calculated makes it apples and oranges.

Poverty?

I grew up with no air conditioning, one car for the family, one bathroom for the family, and helping my mother clip and organize coupons from multiple newspapers. We had one black and white TV, which my dad and I fixed multiple times.

What liberals call poverty today is luxury compared to what my family had. The differences are: (1) we appreciated what we had, and (2) we didn't waste a thing. The real poverty is cultural, and all liberals are suffering from it.

It recommended ... offering paid maternity leave to women to encourage them to work.

Uh ... isn't that like offering to set someone's house on fire to keep them warm? How does collecting welfare -- which is all maternity leave is -- encourage anyone to work?

Americans are ‘living in poverty’ - yet find a single household that doesn’t have a color TV and spend needed funds on lottery tickets.

Europeans wanted the U.S.A. to collapse. Now that it’s about to happen, they’re getting scared.

If the deinition of impoverished is the bottom 15% of the population, then there will always be 15% of the population who is impoverished even if each and every one of those within the 15% are millionaires

Well, there wouldn’t be any poverty if Obama stopped importing millions of third-world illegal aliens and Muslim refugees. Get rid of those le chew and we’d be flush with jobs and cash.

Oh dear IMF, you are totally correct! The US will refrain any future monies to the IMF and give it to the poor of the United States of America. Thank you for helping the US to properly “redistribute” its monies.

“Poverty”? Where?
The U.S. poverty line is some 20x world median income. That’s not “poor” in the colloquial sense.

I’m currently reading “The Man Who Quit Money”. THAT is poor, $0/year for two decades, and he’s doing pretty well for himself.

Tell the IMF to keep their opinions to themselves. And, to KMA. :-)
