Conservatives are wrong to accuse the liberals of relativism. They are not relativists, but have fanatical attachment to certain ideals, which conservatives often fail to understand.
One such ideal is autonomy, which guides their entire sexual agenda. As I argue in The Obligations of Family Life: A Response to Modern Liberalism, the Lefts understanding of autonomy does much damage to marriage and family life.
Autonomy
At first glance, autonomy seems to reflect the traditional American notion that all human beings are created free and equal. For example, everyone believes that marriage begins in the consent of two people and that a married couple should be able to make the most important decisions about their common life without state interference.

Notice how we can’t say marriage is a man and a woman anymore. Now we have to be sure to say it is “two people” or otherwise describe it in gender neutral terms.
Whenever I now quiz leftists about the new “any two consenting adults” definition of marriage, and mention close relatives, I’m finding less and less objection from them.
How can they, when they’ve crafted that definition?
I attended a liberal marriage, officiated by a ‘life counselor’. Instead of “til death to you part’, she said, ‘as long as you are together’.
World’s Shortest book: “What Liberals Get Right About the Family”.
The notion of “any two people” is silly. There is no longer any basis to stop at 2. The courts cannot block polygamy. To do so would defy the logic they have constructed.
Very true.
For now, almost all mainstream religious denominations still define marriage as a man and a woman. For now anyway.
I’ve heard that some denominations were having some big internal debates about the status of homosexuality within their denominations. And that naturally leads to whether they should perform homosexual marriages.
I heard one Christian denomination, don’t remember which, would probably have a split over homosexual marriage. So they will probably divide in two, with one branch being liberal about homosexual marriage and homosexuality, and the other still retaining the traditional marriage definition.
If this happens, it will be interesting to see church membership numbers, as to how many members choose to go to the liberal church, and how many stick with the conservative one.
Having said that, it does pain me to think that religious organizations are now being compelled to confront homosexuality in the first place. What is now decreed legal in our civil laws, is seeping into the churches.
You’re thinking about United Methodism. They punted on addressing the marriage redefinition question until another convention.
