I don’t understand that bit of conventional wisdom.

Why are we REQUIRED to upgrade perfectly good devices with extremely expensive new ones when the old ones are perfectly serviceable?

I can’t stand Apple products, period, but this is more of a general question.

Well think about it: you have a good condition iPhone 4S dating from 2011. That phone can barely run well under iOS 9.3.2. It's time to trade that in for at least an iPhone SE, if not the iPhone 6S itself.
