Eye scale-pulling is a very painful process. It is major surgery. He is legitimately in pain at the earthquake in his world. He is sad today, but I imagine in years to come, he will look back on it and realize it actually was a joy-jumping day. Grief process, and all that. Takes time.
When I started seeing through the left-wing B.S. I was annoyed an just a bit angry at having been fooled and lied to...but not sad. But then I was more apolitical...Democrat by default. However it sounds like this guy was a committed left winger so it may hit him closer to home and cause sadness as well as annoyance and anger.
