The Intellectual Case for Trump III: Yes, Virginia, Trump is Conservative
The Federalist ^ | June 9, 2016 | Mytheos Holt

"How Donald Trump Compares to George W. Bush Trump isn’t a pure movement conservative. But this is not a new problem for conservatives. William F. Buckley Jr. himself said George W. Bush was “conservative, but not a conservative,” and no one complained he’d destroy the conservative movement (until it was too late). Yet the comparison to George W. Bush is important and valuable in evaluating Trump’s conservatism or lack thereof, particularly when you consider that many of the #NeverTrump advocates come from the ranks of ex-W. enthusiasts and supporters."

This is the third installment aka Part III. I see Trump as a pragmatic conservative, in the sense that I am a pragmatic voting Libertarian who never actually votes for the Libertarian. Political correctness and the allegiance to the High Brow definition of what conservatism should be, is what most of the never Trumpsters are spouting, making them just as dangerous to our security as Hillary Clinton.

I’m not confident of that, but he’s more conservative than Hillary.

He’ll turn left after the convention, and there will be people screaming and saying they’re going to stay home on election day.

I bemoaned it as it was taking place. Bush never defended conservative anything because he felt it “beneath the dignity of the office”. Great! I was livid at the time. How could Bush not realize HIS JOB WAS TO DO SO. So the entire Zero pResidency can be attributed to Bush’s lack of understanding JUST WHO HE WAS and failure to lead. Trump, it seems, has learned from Bush’s failure and fighting seems to be something he enjoys. Good. We have one he’ll of a fight on our hands. Thanks to Bush we have had eight years of our nation run by a gang of traitors who only by the Grace of God have not utterly destroyed us. Those who deny these truths are delusional. Churchill said one could count on Americans to do the right thing, unfortunately only after having tried, literally, everything else. Well, we are done with everything else. Time to rid our home of vermin of EVERY STRIPE. Go Trump.

This is the thing... even I’ve had to turn left in terms of what I think the government should do to keep us safe. So far, Trump seems far more conservative than Dubya... seeing what has happened in Europe, immigration and control of our borders is the primary issue for me.

Of course I will admit I was wrong. I will be delighted to admit I was wrong.

If it turns out I’m wrong.

And as far as me being a Cruz supporter: prove it, newbie.

I suspect the “compassionate conservatism” was a rouse, most of us saw it as a peace offering to the left who would not accept the gift, but considering his pushing of agendas like education on the federal level w/Ted Kennedy, the compassionate descriptive may simply have read left wing conservatism.

No matter which way he moves after the convention, a year from now he is going to be much to the right compared to where he is now.

You say that like you've been accused of communist sympathies.

Trump is more conservative than Bush - he's likely to allow weapons in the hands of our military on the bases and Bush did nothing about it.

Trump is very pragmatic which means he will attempt that which can be legally done and not waste time on platitudes.

Trump is far more conservative than George W. Bush, and has a personality, which will tend to keep him moving to the Right, as he comes to focus on more and more specific issues:

As to that personality, see Trump: Metaphor For American Conservatism.

Indeed, Trump has already seized on the single most important issue separating American Conservatives from all other shades of opinion. He puts "America & the Americans," first. No one can read the Constitution in context, starting with the very clear Preamble, and find any higher Conservative priority.

That’s better stated than usual...he’s conservative but not A conservative. Remember former Mayor of NYC Ed Koch? He had a radio talk show for a while and billed himself as a “liberal with sanity”. He used to say “anybody who agrees with me 100% of the time” needs help (or should get their head examined, or some similar phrase). He was liberal, but not A liberal. No lockstep for ol’ Ed!
