It’s the kid’s fault for being on the road where the cop could hit him.

Nanny staters have pursued mobile phone users to the ends of the earth.

Governments are happy to capitalize - literally - by writing tickets.

Meanwhile, cops do 90mph on the highway in non-emergency situations while talking on a hand held phone. Their cruisers have laptops, plate readers, radios, and more.

Maybe the victim had a dog. The offending officer could the go over and shoot it.

So, having a badge doesn’t cure being distracted while driving. Who knew?

Had almost the exact same thing here in Reno a few days ago. Thankfully no one died.

It’s okay when a cop does it. They’re more equal than normal Americans.

The CHP officer, identified only as a 49-year-old man from Willows

How many of us would be afforded the anonymity of this officer?

Same exact thing happened in L.A. a couple of years ago...cop ran over and killed a bicyclist on a windy road while looking at his computer...DA refused to prosecute, saying that officer was protected under civil immunity since he was on duty and doing his job at the time, even though distracted driving is illegal.

Same thing will happen here.

I was always under the impression that if you rear ended some other vehicle it automatically your fault.
You know that old CHP and drivers ed saw about having your vehicle under control at all times

Could have been cell phone.

Whatever the distractions, this is not good for anyone involved. Distracted drivers kill and injure lots of people, daily. LEO’s are like anyone else, they get distracted and make big mistakes.

Grew up there.
Kid’s uncle was in my graduating class (110 kids).
I knew his dad.
if the CHP is local, he was just a couple years behind (in my brother’s class). the town is really shaken up, very small town surrounded by rice farms.

they have radios, both on person and in car, computers and all sorts of other things. It is only a matter of time until distraction causes an accident. Unfortunately, a kid and his family paid the price on this one.

Yes, should suffer the same legal proceedings any of us would, but we know the system plays differently for those with a badge.
