SCRANTON — Kayla VanWert appeared to have taken the advantage over Cathleen Boyer as the two fought Sunday night in the 800 block of McKenna Court, one 16-year-old witness would tell police.
VanWert, 18, was on top of Boyer, 16, who was pulling VanWert’s hair.
Then Boyer started swinging her arm upward, hitting the side of VanWert’s chest.
“She’s stabbing me! She’s stabbing me!” other witnesses heard the older teen scream.
Suddenly, the large crowd that had gathered in the Hill Section alley to watch the fight that grew out of an escalating argument on social media scattered into the night, leaving VanWert bleeding on the ground.
Investigators laid out sometimes chilling eyewitness accounts of the fatal encounter Thursday as they charged Boyer, of Scranton, as an adult with criminal homicide and other offenses in the death of VanWert. She remains in the Lackawanna County Prison without bail.
As she left her arraignment at city police headquarters, walking in handcuffs with her head down, Boyer said she acted in self-defense.
VanWert, who has a 1-year-old daughter named Naomi, was pronounced dead at Regional Hospital on Sunday at 10:03 p.m., less than 15 minutes after she arrived with multiple stab wounds to her torso and chest area.(snip)
Investigators believe the pre-arranged fight was the culmination of a threat-filled, back-and-forth dispute between the two teens that unfolded on Facebook and Facebook Messenger in the hours before the stabbing.
In the arrest affidavit, police said the argument was rooted in VanWert’s suspicions that Jorge DeJesus, 19, the father of her child, was romantically involved with Boyer.

An armed society is a polite society.
At least one of the girls’ parents failed to inspire her to be married before conceiving a child.
Had the girl aspired to that goal I doubt that she would have ended up murdered in the street.

Could well be self defense. The defendant’s problem is it was a pre-arranged fight and the defendant brought a knife, indicating a prior intent to stab the decedent. It would be especially hard for the killer if the decedent didn’t bring any weapons other than her hands and feet and wasn’t doing anything as serious as smashing the killer’s head into a concrete sidewalk.
I’m left with the impression that the streets are a little safer for the rest of us now that these two are not longer about (one way or another).
