Chinese construction on a South China Sea islet claimed by the Philippines would prompt "actions being taken" by the United States and other nations, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter warned Saturday.
Speaking at a security summit in Singapore, Carter said Beijing risks building a "Great Wall of self-isolation" with its military expansion in the contested waters, but he also proposed stronger bilateral security cooperation to reduce the risks of a mishap.

If push comes to shove that is almost certainly what it will come to. If you ask any of the Communist leaders what they are most proud of they will not say anything about equality or progress or any of the other things commies are supposed to care about. They will say Xinjiang, Tibet, and that little piece of territory they stole from India. That's where the priorities of the Chinese leadership lie. These are historical imperatives for the Chinese that did not change just because Chine went red. I think China will eventually prevail over Taiwan and the South China Sea, or they will go to war over them. And if they lose a war they'll just wait fifty or a hundred years and try again.

Self-isolation??? With a steady stream of container ships full of raw materials flowing in from the US and full of manufactured goods flowing out to the US every day?? How long would we go in an actual shooting war with China before the CEOs would stop saying that outsourcing manufacturing is good for the American worker because it creates trucking and shelf-stocking jobs in the US?
“Action” yes is wringing ones hands and stomping ones feet in included as “action”.

I disagree. The Chinese leaders are very patient opportunists. The reason they are doing this now is because we have a ridiculous man-child in the White House.

The danger here is that the Philippines, Vietnam or Indonesia will move on one of these dredging operations expecting that the US will “have their back” — and we won’t.
The Chinese know that Obama likes to lead with his behind.
