America is fighting the Fourth Battle of the Atlantic: Navy admiral warns Russian submarines are waging Cold War-style operations in 'alarming and confrontational ways'
The commander of the Navy's US 6th Fleet has warned that Russian submarines are waging a Cold War-style 'fourth battle of the Atlantic'.
Vice Admiral James Foggo III outlined Russia's submarine operations, which he said is probing US anti-submarine networks, in an article for the US Naval Institute's June issue of Proceedings.
In his article he explained the submarine battles between the Allies and the Germans in World War I, World War II and the Cold War, between the US and the Soviets, and how they compare to Russia's actions today.
He compared those first, second and third battles to Russia's current actions 'prowling the Atlantic'.
Foggo wrote: 'Once again, an effective, skilled, and technologically advanced Russian submarine force is challenging us. Russian submarines are prowling the Atlantic, testing our defenses, confronting our command of the seas, and preparing the complex underwater battlespace to give them an edge in any future conflict.'
He said that Russia's current actions and capabilities have 'increased in alarming and confrontational ways' as its national-security policy is 'aimed at challenging the United States and its NATO allies and partners'.

Why wouldn’t they with a weak President at the helm. It would only get worse with Hillary.
With Russian Navy maintenance, I’d hope their sailors have been keeping up their life insurance premiums.
Oh, they can go get more sailors, however fast they can train them of course.
Why bother? Everyone on Earth is freely welcome to pay $400 to Delta Airlines for a one way trip and simply invade the country.
I'd take my chances with a Putin judge before getting in a 30 year old Victor boat for a month long cruise.
The USN helped win the Cold War against a much more formidable adversary in the USSR. I do not remember any public whining like this. Today it seems many of our military leaders have become drama queens.
I have many concerns for our USN but they are internal and stem from the current political leadership.
The question becomes, so?
Does anyone think this ever stopped? Both navies train daily for this. It’s their job.
With good reason.
However, it's my understanding that our anti-submarine capabilities, in particular, have been seriously degraded.
For example, there's nowhere near the number of P-3s prowling the coast.
Well, sink a few of them and say “Ooops!”
"You lost ANOTHER submarine?"
“’Once again, an effective, skilled, and technologically advanced Russian submarine force is challenging us.’”
Sounds like the Navy is hoping to persuade Congress to accelerate our current submarine construction plan.
” ... there’s nowhere near the number of P-3s prowling the coast.”
The last deployment of P-3s on the East Coast occurred last year. The P-3 has been replaced by P-8s and, more importantly, a sophisticated network of underground sensors and spy satellites.

prowling the Atlantic, testing our defenses, confronting our command of the seas
I remember when the US deployed U.S.-built Jupiter MRBMs in Turkey and Italy against the Soviet Union, unknown to the US public. Then screamed like hell when the USSR tried to put missiles near us in Cuba.
If we’re afraid to act like a superpower (red lines in the sand, caving to Iran, letting Cuba stand post-Cold War, etc) then it’s only natural we lose the perks that come with being feared.
We’re all set. We are converting our boomers into conventional cruise missile launchers and Seal team release subs.
Yeah, that will deter them. /s
