Senator Cotton’s Reminder, Police Lives Matter too

Coverage of the use-of-force incidences such as the shooting of Michael Brown, the suffocation of Eric Garner, and the death of Freddie Gray has created an "anti-cop" sentiment in the United States that many, including Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR), deem dangerous for the future.

"We've already seen one retaliatory attack fueled by misguided rage," said Senator Cotton referring to the New York gunman that ambushed and killed two officers to seek revenge for Ferguson.

Senator Cotton spoke at Hudson Institute last month and took a moment during his address to honor Deputy Sheriff Sonny Smith, an 11-year veteran of Arkansas' police department who was killed in the line of duty last year while responding to a burglary.

"Preserving the peace takes vigilance," reminded Cotton. "It takes hard work. And it takes sacrifice--sometimes, the ultimate sacrifice. We shouldn't stigmatize [the police]; we should thank them." Senator Cotton expressed his concern of the anti-law enforcement sentiment because it has fueled a movement to roll back vigilant policing methods that are responsible for the historic drop in crime since the 1980s.

"When professional protestors stigmatize the police as racist knuckle-draggers, a chilling effect on policing is nearly unavoidable. And the result is the disturbing increase in violent crime of the last two years."

Although crime remains at historic lows compared to the past two decades, criminologists have confirmed that violent crime has been increasing. Many suspect this to be the result of the so-called "Ferguson Effect" in which cops have started to back off from proactive policing due to the public's bitterness directed at them.

"Black lives do matter," assured Senator Cotton. "The lives being lost to violence in America's cities are predominantly those of young black men… But the police aren't the culprits. In nearly every case, the blood is on the hands of criminals, drug dealers, and gang members."

After his nephew was shot and murdered, Alderman Jeffrey Boyd from St. Louis said, "We march every time the police shoot and kill somebody…But we’re not marching when we’re killing each other in the streets! Let’s march for that."

After speaking with many police officers, Senator Cotton reported that police departments wish to see reform fast when police misconduct occurs. He guaranteed that police departments are the first who want to see disciplinary action for misconduct. "What should not and cannot occur is a rush to demonize law enforcement whenever force is used," warned Cotton. "In the absence of facts and hard data, we're vulnerable to heart-wrenching images, to our own biases, and to cheap demagoguery."

Blue lives matter too, and so do those of all the other shades of humanity, Sen. Tom Cotton argues

I don’t trust Tom Cotton.

He attended the Sea Island meeting and is promoted by the likes of Hugh Hewitt.

[I don’t trust Tom Cotton.]

Yet another Tea Party fraud in a long line who joined the traitorous RINOs when he got to DC....

If one more police force decides to stand-down against leftist attack mobs one more time, I’m going to start caring less about them myself.

I've been supportive of the police most of my life, and never saw how a civilized society could be possible without them...but now when I see people who support Trump being brutalized by illegal aliens, and other two-legged sewer rats and the police stand there and do nothing I don't know what to think. I'm beginning to fear that law enforcement in our country has been ideologically corrupted, and may soon become the Tonton Macoute for entrenched leftist tyrants in all levels of government. San Jose has been a watershed for me. I realize that sometimes police must follow orders they personally find distasteful, but what I'm observing now is much different. They are participating in a violent political repression of citizens exercising their rights, and giving free reign to thugs.

So, if there are complaints about policing behavior, the responding tactic is to escalate, right? (/sarc)

********

Actually, if modern police training moved the trainees away from using bullying as the principal tactic, some ground might be gained in convincing that “a policeman is your friend.”

There has been no better spokesman, in my opinion, than Tom Cotton regarding the foolish deal with Iran.

And of course more politicians should speak up and support the police. Good for him.
