Republican Scott Milne made it official Thursday: He's looking to unseat the U.S. Senate's longest-serving member, Vermont Democrat Patrick Leahy.

The 57-year-old businessman was a political newcomer in 2014 when he ran a surprisingly strong but ultimately unsuccessful race against incumbent Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin.

Milne, president of a family-owned travel agency, said in a statement Thursday he would file nominating papers before the deadline for doing so, which was the close of business Thursday at the secretary of state's office. An official in that office's elections division later confirmed receipt of Milne's petitions.

I’d be shocked if Milne won, but I didn’t expect Trump to stay in the race, let alone be the nominee. Never say never.

Are there any Freepers from Vermont?

I am a former VT’er. They have become a pretty liberal mess.

Um, this is the state that sent Bernie Sanders to Congress and to the Senate as a Socialist. What do you think Milne’s chances are ?? All those transplanted MA’ers. Totally destroyed the formerly rock-ribbed Republican conservative state.

Well, this year has been full of surprises. We can always hope. I’d settle for his being defeated.

All those transplanted MA’ers.

I think it's more New Yorkers (like Bernie).

MA'ers go more to Vermont and Maine.

This is the year to throw the spaghetti against the wall to see if it sticks. Good luck to him, if we get 2 or 3 of these and get rid of a RINO or two ( AKA Murkowski in AK, she now has a challenger named Dan Sullivan, the same name as the other AK Senator, and he did it with 10 minutes to spare @ the deadline! LOL ! ), and we have a much different Senate...

Also McCain maybe gone with Dr Kelli Ward usurping him, again a really different Senate, now imagine Murkowski and Leahy gone...

They’re mostly from NY. You can blame the massholes for infecting New Hampshire.

Isn’t Vermont considered the most liberal state in the union now?

I’ll be shocked if the people there throw out Lahey.

I don’t care who he is - I’ll just pray and hope he wins!

There’s no telling about VT.

That state is like another planet.

Leaky Leahy should have been booted from the Senate when he leaked the first time.

Treason ain’t what it used to be.

Massholes wrecked New Hampshire, but in Vermont, the problem is New Yorkers. I think I read that there are more massholes in NH than native NH’ers, and more New Yorkers in Vermont than native VT’ers.

Former 13 year Vermonter. The Dim political class and their supporters are a pack of thieves. As corrupt as you could ever imagine. But with its small population we could Free State the place. Once the welfare tit is cut off many of the libtard rift raft will skulk away for greener pastures. Then turn the University of Vermont into a conservative institution, make taxes rational, and you would have a place that approximates paradise.

I didn’t realize Milne was even considering entering this race rather than opposing LT Gov Phil Scott in the gubernatorial primary. I thought he may for LT Gov instead, never Senate, good of him.

He was nearly elected Governor despite my initial feeling that he had zero chance, so who knows. But I’m not optimistic. This is the first real challenger Leahy has had since 1992 though, that’s good. Can’t win if you don’t run a viable candidate, and VT Republicans are doing that so victory is at least not totally impossible.
