While some of Washington's most prominent Republican leaders are still struggling over whether to endorse Donald Trump, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made the call to do so last month as soon as Trump became the likely nominee.
In fact, for all the talk of the GOP's upheaval, the Kentucky Republican says he doesn't think a Trump nomination will redefine the Republican Party in any substantial way. The party is now at "an all-time high," he said.
McConnell spoke to Steve Inskeep of NPR's Morning Edition about what he sees for the future of the GOP as well as why he approves of Trump's Supreme Court picks and stance on border security, but thinks the candidate's proposed Muslim ban is a "very bad idea."
On Trump's picks for the next Supreme Court nominee
The single most important thing I would remind right-of-center voters in suggesting that they vote for Donald Trump is: Who do you want to make the next Supreme Court appointment? Donald Trump has already put out a list of 10 or 11 right-of-center, well-qualified judges, a list from which he would pick. I think that issue alone should comfort people in voting for Donald Trump for president.
On banning Muslims from entering the United States
It's a very bad idea. I mean, for example, the king of Jordan, who is a great ally of ours, wouldn't be able to come to the United States, and so that's not something I think we ought to do.

These politicians need to understand that Trump acts like a negotiator. He starts with an extreme position and then works toward a negotiated solution from there.
Otherwise, I think the GOP support for Trump is going to build to a crescendo when Republicans beginning to realize the WH is theirs...and the country will be pulled back from the brink of the abyss.

Boehner is so stupid, its not funny. They always buy the media narrative
That may be, Mitch. But establishment pukes like you are on the way OUT!
Mitch is full of crap. IMHO, the all-time Republican high occurred during the Reagan administration. These weasels “representing” us in Wash DC are a bunch of “anything for my election” wimps.
The next all-time high may occur during a Trump administration.

Roccus: McConnell is high.
seems like old mitch has seen the light and has decided the self preservation dictates he get in line
Rove was crying in his beer this morning with McCallum (FoxNews) about mean ole Trump being mean to those poor widdle reporters as the presser yesterday.
Rove and McCallum cried for 10 minutes.
Near the end, they played Rush praising Trump ‘Yeah! Way to go! Finally, a fighter from the Republican side.’
the first question and answer is the key to it all the bill kristols of the world have to know that
I still hate Mitch McConnell and want the filthy GOPe traitor drawn and quartered and his remains fed to wild hogs.
Other than that I’m sure he’s an OK dude.
“At an all time high”
No thanks to you Mcconnell
Maybe McConnell finally woke up to the fact that, if the Republican nominee loses in November, likely McConnell will become Minority Leader, too.
Pubbies are going to have a hard enough time retaining their Senate majority. Pubbies have 24 seats up, Dems have 10. A shift of 3 or 4 could shift the majority.
I see it more like they have been comatose for the last 8 years.
shouldn’t the people of America have a recourse to immediately remove any politician who clearly demonstrates they have no ethics or morals thus is unqualified to serve the public honorably? That wouldn’t leave many in DC but this country would be all the better off.
Hey Mitch I don’t think Don was talking about banning the King of Jordan. Just Omar the merry jihad from Syria.
Mitch McConnell is high.
He suddenly lay emerges from the GOPe cave into the daylight. Saw his shadow and pronounced the GOPe is well and healthy....and by the way, selling his new book.
The GOPe is on a rocky mountain high alright!
