Intransigence is the better option -- default and expulsion from the EU would be rougher than what they're doing now, even if they were doing it now. Which they barely are. In a relatively few years they'll be partnered with Azerbaijan, Turkey, Cyprus, and Israel (more than one partnership) piping natural gas and oil into the EU market, and there will be some alleviation.

There’s a large body of undecideds in the polling, which probably means, unless something happens to really motivate them, they won’t show up election night.

The UK’s EU referendum: All you need to know

[snip] Who will be able to vote? — British, Irish and Commonwealth citizens over 18 who are resident in the UK, along with UK nationals living abroad who have been on the electoral register in the UK in the past 15 years. Members of the House of Lords and Commonwealth citizens in Gibraltar will also be eligible, unlike in a general election. Citizens from EU countries — apart from Ireland, Malta and Cyprus - will not get a vote. [/snip]

Iceland had a problem with reckless Icelandic banks, but everything else works there. Greece has a problem that nothing works in their economy.
