Newt will be 73 this year. It makes no sense for Trump to choose someone who will be 81 if Trump manages to : A. Get elected B. Get re-elected. There must be somebody else out there who won’t put the party in the same situation the Dems are in right now with Biden.

“Newt will be 73 this year. “

I would normally agree with you, in that we need the VP to be an heir apparent to Trump. But consider this:

Unless you win the war, your victory plans are for naught.

2016: pick VP to help win election
2020: pick VP who will be the young, heir apparent to Trump in 2024

By waiting till 2020 to put a younger guy as VP, we’ll have a better idea of who is really with us and who is a trojan horse.

George HW Bush was a trojan horse. He immediately started undoing all of Reagan’s work.

My bet on the 2020 VP for this scenario would be Rand Paul. He has drifted some since in the senate, but his instincts are generally in the right direction. Four years in the senate to prove he’s really on board, and 4 years tutoring under Trump would make him a formidable candidate in 2024.

My thinking is that if Trump was to get elected, then his heavy lifting would need to take place during the first 4 years. If he doesn't do it then the prospect for reelection goes out the window. Therefore he could use the talents of Newt from day one when he is most vulnerable.

If the first term is successful and Newt is 77/78, Trump can thank Newt for his service to the country and chose a younger running mate ( this would need to be agreed upon ahead of time) who would have 4 years to get on the job training for his/her own ticket yet not have the public tired of him/her from being around for 8 years already and looking at the prospect of another 8 years for a total of 16..........

ever think of an older VP with experience etc this go round and should Trump run again, pick a younger VP then?

Right now it’s about stopping the destruction of the country - so maybe we can get to 8 yrs down the road.

I don't understand why people automatically assume that VPs are the natural person to replace the president. Most VPs who eventually become president stink at the job and never come close to their predecessors achievements. (i.e. Bush I)

Yup. And the lemmings around here chanting, "Newt for VP," can't think past 5 o'clock happy hour.

They're not going there to design a future for the Republican party.

They're going there to straighten sh*t out.

Newt is the best choice, by far, for this dangerous mission.

Cheney was selected knowing there was no way he could ever be elected president in his own right, due to age, health, etc. It seems to me that the one thing the Republicans never lack for is candidates to run for the nomination. Trump doesn't need to groom his vice president for that.
