[Red] China pressures Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen to acknowledge One China

China has threatened to cut off regular communication with Taiwan unless the country's new president acknowledges the so-called One China principle.

According to a report from Xinhua, the Chinese state media outlet, China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesman Ma Xiaoguang said on Saturday that only by Taiwan confirming the One China principle - which dictates that the island of Taiwan and mainland China are parts of a single Chinese state - could "cross-Strait affairs authorities continue regular communication."

Ma said the Chinese and Taiwanese authorities had had active interactions since at least 2014 through a hotline and other means, after establishing a regular mechanism that was based on a political agreement called the 1992 consensus.

Ma said the communications arrangement had allowed the countries "to contact each other in a timely fashion, avoid misjudgments, keep disagreements under control, and it was also conducive to enhancing understanding and mutual trust."

"With the operation of the regular communication mechanism, some 'impossibilities' in cross-Strait relations have become realities," Ma said, according to the Xinhua report.

I am surprised China hadn't invaded them yet as part of their expansion campaign.

This game has gone on a long time BUT it may take on new dimensions in the next six months. The Chinese know Obama will not lift a finger to help Taiwan. Of this, they can be virtually certain.

Exactly right. This is a window of opportunity for them. The TOTUS will make a few pious and sanctimonious comments about the need to avoid confrontation but he’ll do nothing.

He will talk and the Chinese will act.

The bigger issue is, can they do so without leaving Taiwan a ruined smoking crater?

I doubt China would desire the island in rubble and with all of its wealth destroyed.

The Republic of China on Taiwan has been on its own since 1971 when it was expelled from the U.N. in favor of the PRC.

The ROC military has been training, & bracing for a Red Chinese invasion since 1949. The U.S. helped it greatly in the early years & still sells it advanced weapons systems.

Obama’s weakness doesn’t play into this, IMO. The Dragon huffs and puffs, and lays concrete on reefs at low tide, but it’s not the only actor in the region & the U.S. is certainly not the only source of resistance to PRC aggression.

An attempted invasion of Taiwan from the Mainland would be transparent in preparation & would come under missile fire before the invasion fleet even pulled away from shore.

Invading Taiwan not so easy. It’s over 100 miles of water.

A Red Chinese invasion of Taiwan would quickly turn into a New Pacific War very quickly in my estimation.

Vietnamese hate the Chinese going back a millenium, the Philippines resent their reefbuilding aggressions, the Japanese see the PRC wanting revenge for Jap atrocities in WWII, South Korea is are fiercely anticommunist, and there are still U.S. ships in the region despite Bammie. Reopen Clark & Subic, anyone?

Beijing will snort & growl, but they have a great deal to lose if they act stupid.

That concrete is a sizeable platform for military assets.

China has recently been doing a little more than huffing and puffing; its harassing our ships and patrol aircraft on a frequent basis. They know Obama is nothing but an effete orator who will do nothing, except may apologize.

I wonder which way the smart yuan in Beijing is betting these days, Hillary, or Trump?

If the ChiComs think Trump will be their next American adversary, they’ll telegraph it somehow. Time to really be studying the tea leaves.

Won’t get Clark, it’s and international airport now. It’s also a tax free zone, kinda like a great big duty free store, with a bunch of businesses open there. Also, Koreans and Japanese have built a lot of high end hotels, and have turned a lot of the old officers quarters into vacation rental houses surrounding golf courses. A lot of the buildings screwed up by Pinatubo blowing in ‘91 were left in disrepair, or salvaged an taken over by the Phil Air Force or by civilian entity’s.

That’s an interesting question. Trump wants to make trade (nd other things like copyright protections) with China a fairer and more bi-lateral deal. That’s not necessarily a bad thing for China; just requires some adjustments to make concessions in a way that is not inimical to their interests. Trump wants a deal and it probably going to be more reasonable than they expect.

I would think the dollar will likely strengthen under a Trump administration making Chinese goods more attractive o Americans. On the other hand, this would hurt U.S. exports. interesting yin and yang.
