Back in 1977 I sat through the trial of an idiot Corporal from our Battalion who though it would be 'cool to roll a drunk' Okinawan man. Since the crime was on Okinawan territory and the victim an Okinawan, they had jurisdiction. The USMC sent me as a representative to "observe" (only).
I was told by our JAG folks that unless the intrepid Corporal had someone on the outside to bring him extra food, he might come close to starving on prison rations.
BTW, the Corporal was drunk, too. Surprise, surprise!

One of the guys in my squadron was convicted on a drug charge. He wrote us a letter detailing life in a Japanese prison, pretty much what you stated. I was in the Jeep that took him to Naha to be turned over to the Japanese authorities. He was crying as they put the cuffs on him.
But somehow the Japanese get a pass.
Mrs. VanShuyten is in Japan right now, and says this is a test for Obama in that there has been a long, on-going dispute about base relocation in Okinawa, more complaints about American behavior around all the bases in Japan, and Obama’s planned visit to Hiroshima.
She said that it’s likely the Japanese government will pretty much ignore him unless he grovels (which actually is what I expect him to do).
