If not, what is the doctor's expertise that provides a basis for distributing such information?

A NRA Eddie Eagle video for kids about gun safety would be a good start. It has this advice for kids who come across guns.
“Stop. Don’t touch it. Leave the areaediately. Tell an adult.”
Following that advice to the letter will prevent “accidents.”
