why do I think this is a made up story. I am sure that there are some true conversions but I bet the facts of the story are made up.

Because it is! They are just looking for clean water to "freshen up" with, and are also there to fake conversion.

I read reports that many of them claim to convert so that they will get asylum, claiming they can’t be sent back because they will be persecuted.
