Strombolian activity at the NE Crater (Osservatorio Meteorologico Nunziata webcam) Strombolian activity at the NE Crater (Osservatorio Meteorologico Nunziata webcam) Etna (Sicily, Italy): (18 May) Since yesterday, volcanic tremor has been gradually increasing and during the evening mild explosive strombolian activity started from the North-East crater. At the time of updating, this explosive activity associated with ash emissions has started to produce a dense plume

Could they have flown through the ash cloud? Ash Clouds and jet engines are not compatible.

Interesting thought. We just passed Mt Etna 2 weeks ago....it looked like it was smoking!

Looks like a well traveled air route so other planes would be reporting such problems.

Here we go again, seems it might be escalating.

See this thread also

I expect this to get worse, not better. It’s been happening with greater frequency the past 2 years, more is to come I’m convinced.

Do some research, look up Dalton Minimum and Maunder minimum, Dark Winter, mini ice age. Link to the documentary Dark Winter in my post in other thread, linked above. Very good info there, watch it if you can.

All those migrants in Sicily must be making the island tip over.

Usually they blame fracking. But I suppose making stromboli or calzone might also cause some rumbling.

Bush’s Fault!

Opps! Sorry, “Trump’s Fault!”.

We currently seem to be experiencing a weakening of the solar magnetic field over time. I’m wondering if that might produce any effects on the Earth, from the Earth’s magnetic field interacting with the Sun’s field?

Any especially physics-savvy FReepers want to chime in?

I was on a military mission to Africa, flight crew needed to land in Sicily for mandatory rest time. We were stuck there for 4 days because of Etna.

I haven’t looked into what happens with the magnetic field, but if and when the sun’s magnetic field weakens, it’s bound to have an effect on this planet and probably every other one.

From what I understand so far, our magnetosphere plays a large part in minimizing the effects of solar radiation on the plants and animals here on earth. If the sun’s magnetic field diminishes, I wouldn’t expect it to have a negative effect on the planet, but if our own does, that might be a problem.

I would expect the solar magnetic field to have an effect on the planet’s orbit, a weaker solar magnetic field means the planet can stray slightly further from the sun. That may not be a huge problem, we’re most likely still going to stay well within the range required for temps to remain fairly stable and life goes on.

I think the bigger problem is the recent weakening in solar activity and sunspots, which I don’t think has a lot of impact on the magnetic field. I may be wrong. The weaker period of solar activity and sunspots has historically meant colder temperatures and a mini ice age, as it’s being called, and increased and more violent geological activity involving some of the worst earthquakes and volcanoes in recorded history. That might also include a change in solar magnetic energy, I’m not sure, and haven’t looked into it but it seems to make sense that the magnetic field would change along with decreased solar activity.

So it may have a definite affect, but I’m just guessing.

Could they have flown through an ash cloud?

Valid thought. Remember back a few years ago when that volcano erupted in Iceland and air traffic had to avoid the impacted area for quite awhile?

And many years ago a British Airways 747 flew through a cloud and it choked the engines and sandblasted the plane.

They were finally able to restart the engines after going below the level of the cloud.

Etna is always erupting in varying degrees. I was stationed at NAS Sigonella in the late ‘80s and there was always fire on the mountain.

“We were stuck there for 4 days because of Etna.”

I hope you made it to Taormina. That would’ve relieved a little bit of the “stuckness”.

(I’m assuming you were at Sigonella.)
